Programs and Services

Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools Special Education Programs and Services

We are dedicated to providing a continuum of support to meet the needs of every student that receives special education services. Every student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will receive services based on the students unique set of strengths and needs. Services and Programming will range for every student. Students may receive specialized instruction in a co-taught setting with a special education and general education teacher, in a resource room setting with the special education teacher, or in a self-contained setting in which the child spends the majority of the day with a special education teacher. Other services that a student may receive are Speech and Language services, Social Work services, Occupational Therapy, and Physical therapy to name a few. Services provided in the school are based on the students eligibility for special education which means that a student 1.) must have a disability, and 2.) that because of the disability the student cannot progress in the curriculum with out special education supports and services. This is what is referred to as adverse impact. We follow the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which differ from medical models of services, therefore what a student may receive outside of the school, may differ from what they receive at school.
