Course Description and Overview of Content:
Math Lab is an elective course aimed at providing students with additional support in mathematics beyond their regular math class.
Course Goal/Intended Outcomes:
The goal of math lab is to reinforce basic concepts that will be essential for success in math class, while assisting students in understanding new concepts as they are taught in the regular math courses. Through successful completion of this course, students will be better prepared for continued success in upcoming math courses.
Texts and/or Other Materials:
We do not have an additional text for math lab. Three days per week, we utilize the Successmaker program. This computer=based program simultaneously assesses and assists students’ mathematical understanding. Required materials: pencil and paper.
Format and Activities:
Classroom sessions will be conducted using lecture, discussion, group work, hands-on activities, and independent skills practice. Assignments will be given on a periodic basis and are due that day. Class time will be given to provide an opportunity for students to ask questions while they work on assignments. On occasion, class periods may be dedicated to providing direct support to concepts that are being taught in the regular math courses. Class sessions on the computer provide students with time to work independently on the Successmaker program. Quizzes may occasionally be administered to assess student learning.
Grading Practices and Procedures:
Grades will be determined through a combination of daily work, in-class participation, Successmaker performance, preparedness, and quizzes, with emphasis placed on performance and efforts. Completion of assignments is an essential part of learning the concepts presented in class. As a result, daily assignments must be completed on time. Therefore, late work will not be accepted for credit.
Regular attendance is essential to ensure learning. Since students are not assigned homework, there is no make up work. Students are excused from work missed while they are absent. Students will be marked tardy if they are not in the classroom ready to begin work when the late bell rings. Please refer to the student handbook for more information regarding attendance/tardiness procedures.
Classroom Rules and Procedures:
Students are expected to arrive in class on time and ready to work. It is essential for students to complete all assignments in order to provide the best opportunity for successful learning. Students are to follow along in class, take notes and participate in class discussions or lectures, and refrain from disrupting the learning of others. When class time is provided for students to work on assignments, it is expected that students will utilize this time to do so. If students finish work in class with time to spare, they are to work on any work from their other classes then read quietly.
Cheating on any assignment or quiz will result in a grade of zero, as well as a discipline referral.
During the course of the year, we will frequently use the Successmaker program to help students achieve grade level in math. The Successmaker program will assist students in mastering mathematical concepts, while assessing their current level of understanding. We may also use the lab to assess student growth with the STAR test on occasion throughout the year. In order for students to be able to use the computers, they must have a current AUP on file with the school.
The most effective way for a parent/guardian to assist in the successful education of a student is to support them in completing all assignments for all classes. A quiet, safe atmosphere for completing work and studying for quizzes or tests will certainly help. I look forward to working with all of my students and their parents in order to provide a very successful learning opportunity. Together, let’s have a great year!
