We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2018-19 educational progress for the Rankin Elementary. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Rankin Elementary for assistance.

For the 2018-19 school year, schools were identified using definitions and labels as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school is one that has at least one underperforming student subgroup. An Additional Targeted Support (ATS) school is one that has three or more underperforming student subgroups. A Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school is one whose performance is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state or has a graduation rate at or below 67%. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given.
* Note TSI and ATS definitions were changed for the 2018-19 school year per federal requirements. The new definitions are:
TSI – The school has at least one subgroup performing in the bottom 25% within each applicable accountability index component.
ATS – The school has met the criteria for TSI identification and has at least one subgroup performing at the same level as a CSI school.
Our school was identified as a not having a label.
For the 2018-19 school year, Rankin Elementary received its fifth year of MSTEP assessment data. While we continue to be pleased with the growth in Math and are working to increase, our ELA scores so that we can surpass the Improvement rate of our peers. We are continuously working to improve in identified areas of weakness. We have continued to implement interventions to assist our lowest performing students as we work to close the gap. We offer school wide programming for our highest achieving students (HAL, Great Books, Book bowl). We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and community with this effort.
Parents and community members can be involved at Rankin in a variety of ways and include but are not limited to: Bi-Annual Parent Teacher conferences, Title 1 events, PBIS Committee, School Improvement Committee, Back pack program through Eastern Michigan Foodbank, Parent Committee, Field Day, COW night (Celebrate Our Writing), and Field Trips. Our students participate in Blueberry Ambassadors, Safety Patrol, Student Council, Young Inventors and Spelling Bees. We continue to collaborate with two local churches to provided tutoring and family needs. They have provided school supplies, sponsored backpacks for families and volunteered in classrooms. We host after school clubs such as Robotics and Science and Tech Club. We are part of a NIJ grant through the Genesee Intermediate School district that supplies our building with a School Resource Officer and Climate Specialist that focuses on Restorative Justice. We are also part of a grant with Flint Institute of Arts that provides hands on art lessons to our students as well as opportunities to visit the College/ Cultural center. Our building also works closely with the CRIM Foundation to incorporate Mindfulness and Yoga into our daily routines. We continue to host an in-school banking program with Elga Credit Union to encourage students to save money. We participated building wide with Junior Achievement bringing outside business people in to teach economics lessons to students K-5.
State law requires that we also report additional information.
- Students that live within the designated school boundaries are able to attend Rankin Elementary School. Additionally, parents may complete forms for Internal Schools of Choice Application if they reside within the Carman Ainsworth Schools district boundaries. For families who are not residents of Carman Ainsworth Schools, they may apply through the district’s limited choice program.
- Rankin Elementary School is in its fifth year of a new School Improvement cycle. Rankin is committed to continuous school improvement. Rankin has established school wide improvement goals through the AdvancED process based on identified student needs. We have identified specific strategies for each grade level based on researched best practices to address these goals. We implemented these activities and strategies during the 2018-2019 school year.
- Rankin Elementary has a highly qualified team of teachers that actively pursues educational excellence for all students. Our teachers work together in Professional Learning Community (PLC) continually to support our students’ achievement and academic growth.
- Curriculum is developed and implemented based on the Common Core Information regarding the core curriculum is contained in grade level pacing guides and teacher provided parent information packets. We are in our second year of a newly adopted Reading program.
- Rankin Elementary measures student achievement in multiple ways. We use the NWEA assessment to determine annual student academic growth.
- Rankin Elementary prides itself with communicating with parents and guardians as evident in the chart of participation at parent teacher conferences held annually in the fall and spring.

In closing, the entire staff and learning community of Rankin Elementary present this report to you with enthusiasm and pride. We plan to continue to celebrate our accomplishments and dedication to our students and families.
